About

I come from a family of talented home cooks, so I guess I can attribute my natural love for cooking to my hereditary genes. Although the decision to sometimes try a recipe beyond my scope of experience comes from everyday inspirations- like baking for my foodie husband, entertaining innumerable guests at home, and generally cooking for my loving family and friends, I find that almost anything related to food inspires me: Television, other bloggers, other instagramers, fresh veggie markets, Indian street food, grandmum's kitchen, mum's kitchen garden...just about anything.

I started cooking as an adolescent, or more appropriately, was compelled to do so while I was doing my post-grad abroad. Unable to afford eating out everyday, my roommate and I cooked handsome treats for ourselves every weekend, trying out new recipes and baking in our fancy oven (provided at the student accommodation). This got me into the cooking groove and I was bitten sorely by the baking bug. After my return home, I found it frustrating to find baking ingredients here, but eventually found my way around things and began to take baking more seriously. Getting married was an added incentive to impress my husband with new desserts everyday! He says he's glad he married me :)

I am still a beginner, and my blog is just another avenue to share what I love doing when I'm happy, sad, sick, tired, confused or frustrated- and that's cooking. Coming from a simple South-Indian brahmin family, I was brought up on rasam, idlis and the likes; food that satisfies the soul. I hence name my blog soulfood, and I hope that cooking will take you to that place in your mind where nothing else exists. A state of nothingness, where every worry in the world is forgotten and every desire dismissed- it's just you and your food. That's what food does to me, and without my food I'm lost and forlorn. It's how I find myself again.

  1. Hi Devyani,

Good to read about you. I sail in the same boat as you. I feel the same way for food and specially baking. I agree baking in our set up is not that easy and l also find, me doing work around for ingredients, equipments and other related things. Now I feel it's an added adventure in our baking.
